News brief reports the deaths of Major-General Edward Marcus Beresford, Scots Guards, and an enlisted man, George Fairgrieve, Hawick, who served 21 yrs. with the 93rd Highlanders. Only one sentence on Fairgrieve. More on Beresford who was b. 1836, 2nd son of Right Hon. Major Wm. Beresford, M.P. Gazetted as ensign with Scots [Fusilier] Guards 1854, served in Crimea 1855, awarded a medal, a clasp and the Turkish medal. Promoted to colonel 1879, retired 1885, same year he was promoted to maj.-gen. Had been invalided by serious fall, for about 10 years. |
