"Death of a Crimean veteran," Inverness Courier, Feb. 25, 1908, p. 4d. "The death took place on Sunday of Mr James Davidson, an old and respected employee of the Highland Railway, who had retired from active work about two years ago. Prior to entering the locomotive works as a tender builder, Mr Davidson was in the Navy. He served in the Baltic in 1854, and possessed the Crimean medal.* Later he saw service in China, for which he obtained the medal with clasps, for Canton and the taking of the Taku Forts by the Allies. On leaving the Navy, Mr Davidson came to Inverness, and he was in the employment of the Highland Railway Company for forty years. He was a quiet and courteous workman, and was highly respected by his fellow-workmen. Deceased was seventy-seven years of age, and is survived by a widow." [* This must mean the Baltic Medal only I think. There does not appear to have been a James Davidson who served in the Baltic in '54 and then in the Black Sea in '55. TM] |
