"Death of a Crimean Veteran," Inverness Courier, Sept. 29, 1899, p. 4e. Henry Dawson, Inverness area, died Sept. 26 in Inverness. A coasting sailor and fisherman, he enlisted "nearly half a century ago" in the 4th King's Own Regiment. Was stationed at Edinburgh Castle, then embarked at Granton in March 1854. Regiment went to Malta, and then to Gallipoli and Varna, "escaping cholera in both places," and landed in Crimea Sept. 14, where the Fourth formed part of the Third Division. "He was present in the Light Company at the battles of Alma and Inkerman, and served in the trenches throughout the siege of Sebastopol until the end of the war." Served a few more years, and then resumed sailing for a living and married a nice woman named MacDonald who had been born on the Culloden estate. |
