"Death of a Crimean veteran," Inverness Courier, Nov. 17, 1908, p. 7c. "The death has taken place at his residence, 347 Saracen Street, Possilpark, Glasgow, in his eighty-first year, of Mr William Hendry, one of the survivors of the Crimean War. Deceased enlisted when 18 years of age, and on the outbreak of war exchanged into a regiment ordered to the front, and formed one of the force which, under Sir De Lacey Evans, marched to the relief of Silistria. On the return of the troops he took part in the battle of Inkerman and the operations before Sebastopol, and was a witness of the famous charge of the Light Brigade. He was awarded the Crimean medal, and was also one of the force sent to Ireland to quell the Fenian rising, for which service he several years ago received the medal. He was for many years employed as gatekeeper with Messrs Walter Macfarlane and Co., Saracen Foundry, retiring about six years ago on a pension." |
