"The services: Cameron veterans," Inverness Courier, May 19, 1903, p. 3d-f. "Two gallant old Camerons were among the veterans of the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny who assembled at Glasgow on the occasion of the King's visit. Q.M.S. James Knight joined the 79th (Cameron Highlanders) in 1864 [sic. - 1854?], served through the Crimean War, for which he has a medal with clasps for the Alma, Balaclava, and Sebastopol; also served throughout the Indian Mutiny, the North-West Frontier campaign of 1863, the Egyptian campaign of 1882, and the Nile Expedition of 1884, gaining medals in each. He also wore the silver medal for long service and good conduct, and was awarded a medal and £10 annuity for meritorious service. Thomas Hunter, with the 79th Highlanders, was engaged in the Crimea at the battles of Alma and Balaclava, and at the siege of Sebastopol, and in the Indian Mutiny at Cawnpore and Lucknow. He afterwards served with the Rohilkund Field Force and 103rd Bengal Fusiliers, completing his 21 years' military service, and is now employed as a messenger by the Anchor Line Steamship Company." |
