"Funeral of a Balaclava Veteran," Inverness Courier, March 14, 1899, p. 6c. Lance-Sergt. Joseph Ireland, 75, Hulme, "one of the six hundred two took part in the famous Balaclava charge," died at home on York Street where he had lived for six years, and was buried Tuesday with full military honors at Weaste Cemetery. Funeral attended by many friends and
relatives. "At the head of the procession walked the firing party, with arms reversed. Following came the band of the Manchester Regiment, preceding the coffin, which was borne on a gun-carriage, and was covered with the Union Jack. Floral tributes were also laid on the coffin. The procession moved at a slow pace along Egerton STreet, the band meanwhile playing very impressively Beethoven's Funeral March." No other details of Ireland's life story provided.
