"Death of notable Crimean veteran," Inverness Courier, April 30, 1912, p. 3d. "Another Crimean veteran passed away on Saturday day in the person of ex-Bailie William Forsyth Machray, Haddington. He was 75 years of age, and the son of an Aberdeen advocate. His brother was the Archbishop of Rupertsland and Primate of Canada. Deceased served in the Scots Guards in the Crimea, taking the discharge rank of Sergeant. He joined the Haddingtonshire Constabulary, and was appointed governor of Haddington prison. He was a member of the School Board, and of the Parish and Town Councils. A prominent Foresters' delegate, he founded in the town the Foresters', Shepherds', Cooperative, and Penny Bank Societies. The eldest son, Mr Robert Machray, is a well-known novelist and journalist. The second son was formerly of the 'Liverpool Courier,' and is now on the Parliament staff of the 'Liverpool Post.' The youngest son is a prominent Winnipeg barrister." |
