"Death of a Crimean Naval Veteran," Inverness Courier, Jan. 23, 1900, p. 6f. "The death occurred at Aberdeen on Saturday of Mr. James Maclean, a Crimean naval veteran. A native of Stornoway, he saw a good deal of active service during the Crimean War, and was under Sir Charles Napier in the whole of the Baltic operations. He afterwards did duty on several of H.M. warships. After being placed on the Coastguard, Maclean as stationed for about 18 years at Muchalls, on the Kincardineshire Coast, where he rose to the rank of chief boatman. While there he distinguished himself in rescuing the crew of a Norwegian vessel, and was publicly presented with a purse of sovereigns, the gift of the King of Sweden. Maclean was subsequently transferred to Amble, and while at Northumberland he reached the age limit and retired on a pension. Deceased, who was 80 years of age, held the Crimean War medal and the long service and good conduct medals." |
