Lieutenant-General Sir John Chetham Macleod, G.C.B., who has just been appointed Colonel of the Black Watch, in place of the late General the Hon. Sir R. Rollo, K.C.B., joined the regiment as an ensign nearly sixty-one years ago, on the last day of April 1846; continuing in it till he left as Lieutenant-Colonel in September 1877. He served in the Crimea, at Alma, Balaclava, the assaults on the Redan, the fall of Sebastopol, and in the expeditions to Kertch and Yenikale, receiving the medal with three clasps, the Legion of Honour, the Turkish medal, and a mention in despatches; in the Indian Mutiny, at Cawnpore, Seraj Ghat, and Kalli Nuddie Bridge, the siege and fall of Lucknow, the capture of Bareilly, and in other actions, receiving the medal and clasp, the C.B., and another mention in despatches; and in Ashanti in 1873-4 was in more fighting, including the Battle of Amoaful, and the capture of Coomassie, receiving the K.C.B., another medal and class, and more mention in despatches. Sir John Macleod became Lieutenant General in 1888, and is now in his seventy-seventh year."
