"Fort William and District: Death of a Crimean veteran," Inverness Courier, Feb. 8, 1901, p. 6b. "Dugald Macphee, residing in Middle Street, Fort-William, died there on Saturday evening, after an illness extending over some months. Dugald, who joined the 71st Highlanders when he was 18 years of age, served through the Crimean campaign and was wont to speak with an enthusiasm of his experiences in the trenches before Sepastopol. Transferring afterwards to the Black Watch, he went with that regiment to India, took part in the wars of the Mutiny, and with the gallant 42nd saw twenty years service in different parts of that country. His remains were interred with military honours in the Craigs Burying-Ground on Tuesday, the funeral being attended by all classes of the community." |
