"Death of Crimean Veterans," Inverness Courier, Oct. 19, 1897, p. 5c-5d. John MacPherson, 73, Longmore Hospital, [no place of origin listed but apparently somewhere in IC's circulation region], had served as a private in the Scots Greys during the Crimean War. Buried in Newington Cemetery, with full military honours provided by Greys at Piershill Barracks. "The coffin was carried on a gun carriage and covered by the Union Jack, and the pall-bearers were eight stalwart troopers of the Greys in full dress, averaging in height not less than 6 feet 3 inches." Earned Crimean medal with three clasps - Balaklava, Sebastopol and Inkerman, plus Turkish medal. Served 14 years and discharged in 1857. Had lived at hospital for some time. |
