"Sergeant Alexander Matheson, who was connected with F (Alexandria) Company, lst D.R.V., for 26 years, and retired in 1885 after obtaining the long-service medal, has died at Bonar Village, in his 72nd year. Previous to joining the Volunteers, Sergeant Matheson belonged to the 42nd Highlanders, having enlisted on the 3rd August 1832. He was on active service during the Crimean War, and obtained the Crimean and Turkish medals, and clasps for Alma, Balaclava, and Sebastopol. He was highly respected in the Vale of Leven, where in Crottenga Works he was employed for 31 years."
