"Sir William Stirling, K.C.B., formerly lieutenant of the Tower of London, died at Folkestone yesterday morning. General Stirling was a Scotsman, and was born in 1835. He was the third son of the late Charles Stirling, Muiravonside, Stirlingshire, and Charlotte Dorothea, daughter of Vice-Admiral Stirling. He was twice married, his second wife having been a daughter of William Stirling of Kippendavie. He served with the Royal Artillery in the Crimea and Indian Mutiny, and took part in the China expedition of 1860, as well as the Afghan campaign of 1878-9. He was lieutenant of the Tower of London from 1900 to 1902."
