General: This is the website of the Crimean War Research Society and as such is run by volunteers. The website is only a part of the whole society 'package' and exists as our window on the world. Our quarterly journal, The War Correspondent, will always be the main focus of society effort: the publication of the results of members' research is the society's primary aim, and two of the main benefits of society membership are automatically receiving every issue of the journal and having work accepted for publication therein. Here at the website our role is to promote the society and society publications, provide some guidance researching the Crimean War and hopefully encourage people to join. Every effort is made to correct coding and scripting errors and the activities of gremlins as they occur, however, because it is not a full-time job, oversights and delays are possible. The 'webmaster' genuinely appreciates being informed of spelling mistakes and the like - so if you spot any please email him. (Remember that as a British-based society we try to use proper EN-UK spelling - not the EN-US hybrid version in use in some former colonies!) :-) |

Research help: Unfortunately, because the society has no full-time officers, we are unable to provide a research help service for the General Public. The treasurer can answer questions about membership; the publicity officer those from 'the media' and about CWRS activity; the publications officer about CWRS publications; the webmaster about this website, but we can't do your research for you. However, we do have excellent 'Frequently Asked Questions', 'Chronology' and 'Overview of the war' pages which between them will answer a whole range of basic and not so basic questions about the war. Besides that, there is an ever-growing body of material in our 'Resources' pages and, most particularly, at David Kelsey's 'Crimean Texts' website. We also link to a number of very useful sites; from those run by large organizations to private individuals slaving away over a hot keyboard for the love of their subject. If you become a member of the society you can address queries to the editor of The War Correspondent and he will publish them - and in most cases they will be answered by other members, or at the very least inspire whole new fields of research...! For instant contact and debate with others interested in the Crimean War, we can thoroughly recommend the Crimean War group at Yahoo Groups - a large number of CWRS members are also members there, and the group contains experts on every aspect of the war imaginable. |

Navigation (frames and javascript): We use frames to facilitate navigation. We also use javascript in parts of the navigation and certain applications like the daily diary. Internal search engine: Our internal search engine is courtesy of Freefind. And free it is - however, this means there is a certain amount of fairly unobtrusive advertising on the search results pages. The search is set up for both this site (crimeanwar.org) and David Kelsey's site at crimeantexts.org.uk - so the results of a search may take you 'off-site', although David Kelsey's pages are viewed in the body frame of this site when accessed via the Freefind search engine... |
